An apparatus for measuring a predetermined time period comprises timing means, display means and control means for controlling the display means. The display means is preferably arranged to display both time elapsed from the start of the predetermined time period and time remaining until the end of the predetermined time period. In one embodiment, the display means consists of a row of LEDs which illuminate in sequence to indicate the time elapsed since the start of an adjustable predetermined time period. A second display means consists of dual 7-segment LEDs or liquid crystal display which indicate alphanumerically the time remaining until the end of the predetermined time period. The device is particularly useful for people giving speeches and other oral presentations. The row of LEDs preferably being split into three sections representing start, middle and end, the respective LEDs of each section being of a different colour.
