The present invention provides an interleaver for MIMO-OFDM which interleaves bits across data blocks, each block containing the number of bits required to generate an OFDM symbol. One embodiment (Fig. 7A) employs a plurality of IEEE 802.11a interleavers operating in parallel. Each of these interleavers interleaves bits within a block of bits, each block of bits comprising the number of bits required to generate an OFDM symbol. The outputs of the parallel interleavers are then combined in a way which ensures there is interleaving between the blocks. This may be achieved by concatenating a column output of a first interleaver with the corresponding column output(s) of the other interleaver(s) as shown. Alternatively a single interleaver which is double the size of a standard IEEE 802.11a could be used to interleave bits across two potential OFDM symbols (see Fig. 6a). Complementary deinterleavers are disclosed.
