A sensitive high speed optical receiver or memory sense amplifier comprises a common-gate input stage T1,T2 for receiving input currents and feeding a voltage comparator T3,T4. There is negative resistive feedback around the comparator. The comparator outputs are buffered by source followers T5-T8. The receiver provides greater sensitivity than prior circuits, while minimising noise.
