PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass material for press forming where the occurrence of fusion and cloudiness during press forming is suppressed and where flaws and refractive index variation are not caused on the surface of a formed optical element, by subjecting the material to a suitable surface treatment.;SOLUTION: The glass material for press forming comprises a glass lump having a modified layer on its surface. The modified layer is formed by treating the surface of the glass lump obtained by the preliminary forming of an optical glass with carbonated water. A method for producing the glass material for press forming is characterized in that a glass lump is produced by the preliminary forming of the optical glass and by the surface treatment of the glass lump with carbonated water.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
