PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain an iron-based compact having high density and an iron-based sintered body having high strength and high density.;SOLUTION: An iron-based mixed powder for this iron-based compact includes an iron-based metallic powder and a graphite powder or further a lubricant mixed therewith. A not-yet-compacted material of the iron-based powder is prepared by pre-sintering the mixed powder at a temperature higher than 1,000°C but 1,300°C or lower in a non-oxidative atmosphere having a nitrogen partial pressure of 30 kPa or lower; then acquires a composition comprising 0.10-0.50 mass% C, 0.3 mass% or less O, 0.010 mass% or less N, and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities; and has a density of 7.2 Mg/m3 or higher. The method for producing the compact includes rapidly compacting the not-yet-compacted material under a condition of a compacting energy density of 1.4 MJ/m2 or higher.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
