PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit for a liquid crystal display device, wherein occurrence of circular unevenness at low humidity can be suppressed.;SOLUTION: The backlight unit 2 for the liquid crystal display device illuminates a liquid crystal panel 17 which is to be installed in the liquid crystal display device 1 and which is interposed between a pair of polarizing plates from the side opposite to its display surface. The pair of polarizing plates are an upper side polarizing plate 19 on the display surface side of the liquid crystal panel 17 and a lower side polarizing plate 18 on the opposite surface side of the liquid crystal panel 17. A diffusing sheet 16', which is a member disposed on a position closest to the lower side polarizing plate 18 when the backlight unit 2 has been mounted on the liquid crystal display device 1, out of members constructing the backlight unit 2, has hygroscopic material layers b, d which are layers exposed to an air layer between the diffusing sheet 16' and the lower side polarizing plate 18 and contain a hygroscopic material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
