PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymeric dye capable of uniformly and firmly dyeing lens, etc., in a single process without the need of processes such as fiber or yarn dyeing, piece dyeing, after-treatment etc., esp. suitable for producing e.g. highly hydrous colored soft contact lens. ;SOLUTION: This polymeric dye is obtained by reaction in the presence of a hydrophilic solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide under basic condition between (A) a noncrosslinked polymer bearing at least one kind of reactive group selected from OH, amino, imino and mercapto groups (e.g. a polymer with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate as the main component, PVA) and (B) a vinylsulfone- or dichlorotriazine-type reactive dye (e.g. C.I.
