METHOD AND SOFTWARE FOR ASSIGNING LIGHT-TRAIL IN OPTICAL NETWORK

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain improvement in efficiency of wavelength utilization in a wavelength division multiplexing optical network (NW).;SOLUTION: A method for assigning an optical trail (OT) in an optical NW includes identifying unassigned traffic flows (TF) in the optical NW that require assignment to an OT, where each TF is communicated from an associated source node to an associated destination node. The method also includes identifying which unassigned traffic flow includes the largest amount of traffic, establishing a new OT beginning at the source node of the identified TF and ending at the destination node of the identified TF, and assigning the identified TF to the established OT. Furthermore, the method includes judging whether there are any unassigned TFs having associated source and destination nodes included in the established OT. If such unassigned TFs are confirmed to exist within the OT, the method includes assigning the unassigned TFs to the OT in order of the amount of traffic that each TF includes, until a capacity of the OT is reached.
