PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a thermochromic material. SOLUTION: A compound containing repeating units of the formula: A1 -M1 -X- B-Y-M2 -A2 (A1 , A2 each are terminal chains; M1 , M2 each are mesogenic groups; X, Y each are binding groups consisting of COO, OCO; B is an aromatic group), e.g. 1,3-oxobis(hexyloxy-benzylidene anilinebenzoic acid)benzene. The compound is obtained by dissolving m-dihydroxybenzene, n-hexyloxyazomethinecaroboxylic acid, and dimethylaminopyridine in THF and subsequently reacting the components in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The new compound is a liquid crystal compound excellent in a thermal coloring or fading property without introducing an optically active group thereto. A thermochromic material using the new compound exhibits a ferrodielectric smectic liquid crystal phase structure or a ferrodielectric twisted grain powdery liquid crystal phase structure, and is suitable as a material for dimming elements, optical filters, recording elements, thermometric labels, heat-sensitive inks, heat-sensitive pigments, toner pigments, etc.
