PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cemented carbide gear cutting tool with a hard coated layer exhibiting excellent abrasion resistance in high-speed gear cutting processing of a high-responsive cutting material.;SOLUTION: In this surface coating cemented carbide gear cutting tool, an upper layer and a lower layer and a lower layer are provided on made of (a) (Ti, Al, Ta)N respectively on the surface of a tungsten carbide group cemented carbide gear cutting processing base element. The upper layer has average thickness of 0.5-1.5 μm, and the lower layer has average thickness of 2-6 μm. (b) The upper layer has an alternatively laminated structure of a thin layer A and a thin layer B having one average layer thickness of 5-20 nm. The thin layer A is a (Ti, Al, Ta) N layer satisfying a composition formula:[Ti1-(A+B)AlATaB]N, and the thin layer B is a (Ti, Al, Ta)N layer satisfying a composition formula: [Ti1-(C+D)AlCTaD]N.
