PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for monitoring a storage container for radioactive substances which makes it possible to easily monitor the integrity of the storage container and a radioactive substance storage system provided with a monitor. SOLUTION: A main body 15 of a container of a canister 14 housed in a concrete container 12 is filled with helium of a prescribed pressure. The monitor 60 has thermoelectric couples 62 placed on the outer peripheral surface of the main body 15 of the container in the concrete container, and these thermoelectric couples 62 are located at intervals along the direction of the height of the main body of the container. A detector 64 of the monitor 60 detects the change in the temperature distribution in the direction of the height of the main body 15 of the container on the basis of the temperature measured by the thermoelectric couples 62 to monitor the leakage of the helium.
