PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new alkyl 3,7-dimethyl-4-oxo-7-octenate useful as a rose furan precursor capable of mass-producing rosefuran as the important component of rose-like fragrance byproduct site isomers dispensing with any complicated process. ;SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by the formula (R is H or a lower alkyl), e.g. methyl 7-dimethyl-4-oxo-7-octenate. The compound of the formula is obtained by coupling reaction between (C) a 2-methyl-3- carboalkoxypropionic acid halide and (D) a 3-methyl-3-butenylmagnesium halide in the presence of (A) a copper salt catalyst such as copper chloride, copper bromide or copper iodide in (B) an organic solvent such as ether, tetrahydrofuran, benzene or toluene at -50 to 0°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
