PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic EL device which has a high color purity, can emit light with high intensity and high efficiency with a low-voltage drive and is excellent in repetitious-use stability by using a heterocyclic compound which is a condensation product of a five-member ring or a six-member ring with a five to seven-member ring. ;SOLUTION: A heterocyclic compound which is a condensation product of a five- member ring and another five-member ring or a five-member ring and a six-member ring is preferable. A heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen and a heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen on its condensation position are preferable. A compound of formula I (Z1: a five or six-member ring), formula II(Z2: a five or six-member ring) and formula III (Z5: a five or six-member ring) are preferable. A metallic complex comprising these compounds and a metal ion is also preferable. For an electroluminescence device having an light-emitting layer or an organic-compound film containing an light-emitting layer between a pair of electrodes, at least one of which layer contains these compound device material or one prepared by dispersing the device material into a polymer is preferable.
