PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly feed a printing medium at a predetermined feeding speed in an area in which the feeding speed of the printing medium is changed, if the area exists, in a serial type printer.;SOLUTION: In feeding a sheet P, when feeding of a predetermined amount of the sheet is commanded, the feeding is once terminated at the entrance Pb of a BS drive area ABS, if it is judged that the rear end of the sheet P is positioned in the BS driver area ABS (a low speed area). Then, the commanded sheet feed amount is divided so that the remaining sheet feeding is carried out. Through this dividing, the first sheet feeding is carried out at a normal speed VNR, and the second sheet feeding is carried out at a low speed VBS. Further, when the sheet feeding wherein the rear end of the sheet P is beyond the BS drive area ABS is commanded, the sheet feeding is once terminated at the exit Pc of the BS drive area ABS. Then, the commanded sheet feed amount is divided so that the remaining sheet feeding is carried out.
