PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of character recognition concerning technology which extract connecting components from a document image and extracts basic components for character recognition from the extracted connecting components, by extracting connecting components having characters and figures separated even from an image wherein the characters and figures are at narrow intervals and removing unnecessary components for binarization and character recognition from the connecting components. SOLUTION: A spread part outside an edge is removed by a difference filter means and an image converting means which holds the output value of the difference filter means at 0 when the output value varies to a negative and holds the output value at 0 until the value exceeds a positive peak and reaches 0 when the output value varies to a positive. A gray scale image included in the circumscribed rectangle of the connecting components is regarded as a basic component, a basic component other than characters is decided according to the inclusion relation between basic components, and binarization and character recognition are omitted as to the mentioned decided basic component to increase the efficiency of the processing.
