PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for screening the characteristics of an optical amplifier without the injection of external light in the optical amplifier or the need for highly accurate fiber coupling.;SOLUTION: A light incidence end and a light emergence end of the bar- shaped semiconductor optical amplifier 1 comprised of a plurality of elements are provided with light receivers 2 and 3 and a needle-shaped probe for impressing a current on each element of the optical amplifier. A current is impressed to measure light reception intensity at the insertion and removal of wavelength filters 5 and 6. By comparing the results of measurement with a specified value, the characteristics of the semiconductor optical amplifier 1 are screened.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
