PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gradation characteristic data generating system that can generate gradation characteristic data, even when a task of actually measuring a contrast level of a printed patch is interrupted on its way. SOLUTION: When actually measuring an output level of a patch, an output level of a printed patch by giving an upper limit and a lower limit of an available input level to a printer is first actually measured. Then a desire number of patches only have only to be actually measured between the upper limit and the lower limit, and this actual measurement task may be stopped on the way. Gradation characteristic data are generated from the patches whose output levels are actually measured, depending on the cross reference between the actually measured output level and the input given to the printer (S123). Interpolating the output levels which have, already been actually measured generates gradation characteristic data of patches, whose output levels are not actually measured (S126).
