A weighing and batching system for weighing a batch of articles within a target weight interval includes a feeder system having an inlet and a plurality of outlets, and first and second pluralities of weighing pans, each of which is positioned for receiving the articles discharged from a respective outlet. Each pan in the second plurality defines a volume 2 to 50 times the volume of each pan in the first plurality. Each of the first plurality of pans includes a first actuator for operating the pan between a weighing state and a transfer state, and a first transducer generating a first signal representing the weight of the articles received. Each of the second plurality of pans includes a second actuator for reversibly operating the pan between a weighing state and a transfer state, and a second transducer generating a second signal representing the weight of the articles received.
