The present invention relates to an analog of a native keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) corresponding to amino acid positions 32 to 194 of SEQ ID No:2, optionally along with a signal sequence corresponding to amino acid positions 1 to 31 SEQ ID No:2, wherein the analog exhibits at least some biological activity and substantially consists of KGF amino acid sequence in which up to 24 amino acids are in positions 32 to 55 SEQ ID NO: 2 are deleted, substituted and/or inserted, wherein the cysteine radical in the amino acid position 32 SEQ ID NO: 2 and the cysteine radical in the amino acid position 46 SEQ ID NO: 2 are each either deleted or substituted with another natural amino acid, wherein the analog differs from keratinocyte growth factor protein consisting of amino acids 55 to 194 SEQ ID NO: 2. There is also disclosed a pharmaceutical composition and a kit based on the invented KGF analog, process for its preparation and use for the manufacture of a medicament to stimulate non-fibroblast epithelial cell proliferation. Further disclosed is a recombinant nucleic acid molecule encoding said KGF analog, a biologically functional vector comprising a molecule of the nucleic acid and a prokaryotic or eukaryotic host cell comprising said nucleic acid molecule or said biologically functional vector, and in vitro method of stimulating non-fibroblast epithelial cells comprising administering an effective amount the above-described KGF analog or a pharmaceutical composition based thereon.
