The invention relates to oil production industry, in particular, to use of gel-forming compositions based on polyacrylamide (PAA) and cross-linking agent in different methods of increasing oil recovery of strata and carrying out water-shutoff operations. The inventive result is aimed at enhanced efficiency of affecting formation by cross-linked polymer systems by using an advanced method of selection a polymer gel-based composition for levelling penetration heterogeneity and coverage of formation to increase oil recovery and restrict water inflow in production wells. The method of selecting a polymer gel-forming composition for increasing oil recovery and restricting water inflow based on polyacrylamide (PAA), a cross-linking agent and water comprises: predetermined PAA selection, including experimental determination of its properties such as: PAA τtime, gelation time Tof a production well, static stress of strain, determination of formation features for a definite well, determination the following technological characteristics according to designed formulae: initial pressure gradient, minimum radius of gel screen formed in the formation , minimum volume of said composition, volumetric rate and injection time of said composition; selection of the composition provided that: the injecting time is less of the gelling time and more than the polymer time dilution.
