A water-permeable non-woven felt mat (1) with floats (4,4a) at its both top edge and a weight at its bottom edge, is dragged like a dragnet or trawl net in the algae collection area. The mat is dragged into a loop diminishing in size near a collection vessel to pump the collected algae sludge into a perforated container. The floats comprising a cellular plastic tube or a rolled-up strainer cloth, maintain the top edge of the mat on the water surface, and the weight comprises a metal chain. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for preventing or regionally confining blue-green algae.
