The invention relates to a method of extracting a water- containing and/or oil-containing and/or gas-containing and/or solid-containing sample medium (27) from a borehole (8) with the aid of a sampling device (1) which belongs to a drill string (15) and is arranged above a drilling device (21), in which, during a drilling operation, a flushing medium (9) is conveyed via the sampling device (1) into an annular gap (11) between a borehole wall (12) of the borehole (8) and an outer wall (13) of a drill pipe (14) of the drill string (15) in the direction of the surface, in which, during a sampling procedure, a sample medium (27) is withdrawn via a sampling unit (3) of the sampling device (1) and conveyed via the drill pipe (14) towards the surface, and in which the drill string (15) remains in the borehole (8) during the sampling procedure. In order to develop a method of the aforementioned type in such a way that it is possible to be able to carry out a sampling procedure in any depth of borehole in a simple manner and without the risk of the borehole (8) collapsing, the invention provides that, following a sampling procedure, the sample medium (27) present in the drill string (15) is exchanged substantially completely by the flushing medium (9) prior to the continuation of the drilling operation.
