For enhancing the stability of optical data storage devices comprising a recording layer made of a recording medium, the recording medium contains a stabiliser in addition to a cationic dye and at least one substance with quencher function. The stabiliser is a phenol with one or more hydroxy groups, which advantageously is present in the recording medium in the form of a phenolate ion and which forms a part of the anions for the dye cations. In addition, the recording medium can also contain an anionic, metallo-organic thiolene complex replacing a usual quencher and forming another part of the anions for the dye cations.
