The device is for the controlled release of a product, such as cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and comprises a holder which holds the product, an outlet for issue of the product and devices for selective product release. At least one of the release devices and the outlet constituents has components for rendering the product unusable, when the lid of the holder is forced. A viewing hole (15) is provided in the holder to enable the owner to check the state of the contents. A chip (16) is incorporated, which controls the various components. The chip may also take the form of a battery (17). A transporter receives a cigarette (6) for delivery to the owner when authorized by an incorporated timer. A system (9) acts to render unusable the contents of teh holder in the event of forced entry. It comprises a coil which creates an electromagnetic field, causing a blade (11,12) to move up and down and backwards and forwards to nullify the contents of the holder.
