The wall (14) of the pipe (12) for carrying tap water through the heat exchanger (10) has at least one fin (15) extending in the pipe length direction which is joined to a first wall (11) of the heat exchanger. An intermediate zone adjoining the fin and located in between the pipe and first wall is used to collect any leaking wastewater and/or any tap water leaking from the pipe wall. The heat exchanger is oriented in a horizontal position when installed beneath the bath or shower tub (3). The heat exchanger has a double wall forming a heat exchanging partition between the wastewater leaving and tap water entering it. This double wall comprises a first wall which is slanting relative to the horizontal direction, over which the wastewater flows, and a second wall formed by the wall of the pipe used to carry the wastewater.
