The device is designed to recognize the person treating the customer in the chair (1) in order to accurately set the chair at the optimum working height, and it can also accurately determine and store the location of the work area associated with the customer sitting in the chair. Height is measured using a reader (3) which receives radio signals from RFID tags (4-6) worn by e.g. the hairdresser and customer and secured to the collar of the cloak worn by the customer. A first guide portion is fixed to a base plate, a set of at least two guide paths oriented in the vertical direction is connected to the first guide portion, a second guide portion can be moved along the guide paths relative to the first guide portion and is secured to the chair frame, a electrically powered linear actuator is used to move the second guide portion in the vertical direction and a control unit is used to set the chair frame at the optimum working height.
