Methods for the production and extraction of lipopolysaccharide from deep rough mutant bacteria

A method of producing a lipopolysaccharide composition (LPS) comprises: (a) growing a culture of a deep rough mutant bacterial strain in a medium; (b) maintaining the culture in stationary phase for at least about 5 hours; (c) harvesting cells from the culture; and (d) extracting LPS from the cells. Preferably, the deep rough mutant bacterial strain is selected from the genus Salmonella, such as Salmonella Minnesota R595.
