Use of a copper chelator for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of a human patient predisposed to or suffering from diabetes, wherein the copper chelator may be ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or o-phenanthroline or a triene such as triethylenetetramine dihydrochioride.
