Disclosed are 5 membered heterocyclic compounds of the formula (I) wherein: ring A is represented by any one of the formulae shown; R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl, a substituted or unsubstituted heterocycle or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocycle-substituted carbonyl; R2 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocycle or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; and R4 is H or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl. Compounds of the type disclosed are useful in the treatment of diseases where a large conductance calcium-activated K channel opening activity is efficacious.
