The board of wood, or wood replacement materials, has edge strips (12) bonded durably at the narrow sides. The intermediate layer (3) of the board sandwich structure, of a lower strength than the outer layers (1), is cut out into a groove to take an inner plug (9) of the edges strips. The outer surface of the edge strips is flush with the board surface, with rounded ends (13). The bonding surfaces are treated with a primer before an adhesive is applied. The edge strips are of a plastics material, or the same material as the outer layers.
