Separate or combined pressure and temperature sensors are provided at the refiner grinding segments (12) or in a rail extending along the active radius of the segment. Data from these sensors is combined with material and process variables to create a physical model which includes an independent grinding gap. A system for intermittently calculating the grinding gap in a pulp refiner comprises a number of separate pressure and temperature sensors or combined pressure-temperature sensors, which are located either on or in at least one of the refiner grinding segments, or in a parallelepipedic elongated rail extending along the active radius of the segment. The pressure and temperature data is combined with material variables (e.g. chip or pulp density) and process variables (e.g. motor load, chip and pulp supply, diluting water addition, pressure and temperature of incoming and outgoing flow and hydraulic pressure (5)), and with the aid of a physical model it can be used to minimize the difference between the measured motor load and the integral of the energy distribution across the grinding region (9) calculated using this model, creating an independent grinding gap in the model.
