The device comprises two separate elongated units for securing in a vertical position to the legs of the user. Each unit comprises a body extending the entire length of the unit and having an upper part, a middle part and a lower part. The upper part has a fastener for securing around the lower leg and is intended to be located above the water surface. At least one support is connected to the lower part, which is intended to be located beneath the water surface. The middle part extends between the upper and lower parts and is designed to be located both above and below the water surface. The supports protrude sideways from the units at right angles to the latter and comprise a front section pivotally connected to the unit body and a rear section extending in a backwards direction relative to this body. The supports can be pivoted between an upper horizontal position in which they provide thrust and a lower vertical position which is automatically adopted when the unit is lifted up in the water.
