Process for manufacturing a catalyst (1) with a non-circular monolith (2) that is closely surrounded by an envelope plate (4, 5) with interposition of an expanded mat (3), the envelope plate consisting of two partial enveloping plates (4, 5) curving towards their final destination position so that they overlap with at least edge areas (12, 13, 14, 15) that run substantially in the longitudinal direction of the monolith (2) and join a with another in an indissoluble manner in said edge zones (12, 13, 14, 15), characterized in that, in the case of edge zones (12, 13, 14, 15) already plugged into each other, respectively, with pressure pieces (32) on the outer edge areas (12, 14) or on the free wings (8, 10) of the partial wrap plates (4, 5) and with pressure pieces (29) on the free wings (9, 11) of the partial enveloping plates (4, 5) and forces (F3, F4) press the wings (9, 11) on the surface expanded eyelid (3) and this on the wide sides of the monolith (2), and forces (F5, F6) press the edge areas (12, 14) on the edge areas (15, 13) located below them and they also press the wings (8, 10) on the expanded mat (3), which is in turn pressed on the wide sides of the monolith (2).
