DNA segments encoding the Erwinia herbicolaenzymes geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) synthase,phytoene synthase, phytoene dehydrogenase-4H, lycopenecyclase, beta-carotene hydroxylase, and zeaxanthin glycosylaseand DNA variants thereof encoding an enzyme havingsubstantially the same biologically activity, vectors containingthose DNA segments, host cells containing the vectors andmethods for producing those enzymes, a method forprotecting plants from the herbicide norflurazon, as well as methodsfor producing GGPP and the carotenoids phytoene,lycopene, .beta.-carotene, zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin diglucoside byrecombinant DNA technology in tranformed host organismsare disclosed.
