The present invention is an improved methodand apparatus for testing and monitoring wellboreoperations. The invention is (1) a data acquisition devicecapable of monitoring, recording wellbore and/orreservoir characteristics while capable of fluid flow control;and (2) a method of monitoring and/or recording atleast one downhole characteristic during testing,completion and/or maintenance of a wellbore. Theinvention includes an assembly within a casing stringcomprising a sensor probe having an optional flow portallowing fluid flow while sensing wellbore and/orreservoir characteristics. It also includes a microprocessor,a transmitting device, and a controlling device locatedin the casing string for processing and transmittingreal time data. A memory device is also provided forrecording data relating to the monitored wellbore orreservoir characteristics. Examples of downholecharacteristics which may be monitored include:temperature, pressure, fluid flow rate and type, formationresistivity, cross-well and acoustic sesmometry, perforationdepth, fluid characteristic or logging data. With themicroprocessor, hydrocarbon production performancemay be enhanced by activating local operations inadditional associated downhole equipment, e.g., watershut-off operations at a particular zone, maintaining desiredperformance of a well by controlling flow inmultiple wellbores, zone mapping on a cumulative basis,flow control operations, spacing casing and itsassociated flow ports in multiple zone wellbores, maintainingwellbore and/or reservoir pressure, sensing perforation characteristics,sensing reservoir characteristics or any number of other operations.
