A system and method for automatically calculating safety-related compliancedata for vehicle operators. Vehicleoperators enter an identification code and status information into a mobilecommunication terminal (106) located on a vehicle (102).The identification code and status information is generally stored in a memorylocated within the mobile communication device. Theidentification code and status information can be transmitted (108) to acentral station (104) where it can be processed to determinecompliance with safety regulations. The resulting data may be transmitted(108) back to the vehicle (102) upon request. In anotherembodiment, a processor located within the mobile communication terminal (106)processes the identification code and statusinformation. The resultant data may then be transmitted (108) to the centralstation (104) or presented to the vehicle operator uponrequest.
