The present inventionprovides an optically clear, hydrophiliccoating upon the surface of a silicone medicaldevice by sequentially subjecting the surfaceof the lens to plasma polymerization in ahydrocarbon-containing atmosphere and thencovalently attaching a preformed hydrophilicpolymer to the surface of the carbon coating.The invention is especially useful for forminga biocompatible coating on a silicone contactlens.
