An ink delivery system which includes a shortform factor ink jet pen having a supply of ink for depositingon an ink receiving medium. An adapter (50) is mounted tothe short form factor pen to permit it to be removably mountedwithin a pen receptacle or stall dimensioned to receive a tall formfactor pen. The ink jet cartridge (20) includes a housing (22), aprinthead mounted on the housing, datum surfaces on the housing(22) for registering a position of the housing in a fixed,repeatable position in a first carriage structure, and a cartridge setof electrical contacts mounted to the cartridge housing and electricallycoupled to the printhead. The cartridge set of electricalcontacts is positioned on the housing (22) for electricalcontact with a corresponding first carriage set of electrical contactswhen the cartridge is mounted in the first carriage structure. Theadapter structure is mounted to the cartridge housing to providean assembly of the adapted structure and the cartridge, theassembly adapted for mounting in a second carriage structureconfigured to receive an ink jet cartridge of a different size in a fixed,repeatable position. The second carriage structure has a secondcarriage set of electrical contacts.
