A biometric authentication device and associated method for providingauthenticationinformation associated to a person. The device receives a live biometricsignal andidentification information associated to the person. The identificationinformation maybe manually provided of may be obtained from a machine readable zone locatedon amedium carried by the person. The device processes the identificationinformation toderive access information that is then used to extract information stored onanelectronic chip associated to the person. The device then derivesauthenticationinformation associated to the person at least in part on the basis of theinformationstored on the electronic chip and the live biometric signal and releases asignalconveying the authentication information. Advantageously, the device allows,forexample, a user to assess whether the person carrying a given medium (such asapassport) is the owner of that medium.
