The invention describes a method of automatically identifying the functional positions of the loudspeakers (LSUB1/SUB, LSUB2/SUB, LSUB3/SUB, LSUB4/SUB, LSUB5/SUB) of an audio- visual system (1), which method comprises the steps of defining a central reference point (P) by a detecting means (M) in a fixed relationship to a central viewing region (2) of the audio- visual system (1), acoustically determining the relative positions of the loudspeakers (LSUB1/SUB, LSUB2/SUB, LSUB3/SUB, LSUB4/SUB, LSUB5/SUB) to each other and to the central reference point (P), and using the relative positions to determine the functional positions of the loudspeakers (LSUB1/SUB, LSUB2/SUB, LSUB3/SUB, LSUB4/SUB, LSUB5/SUB) relative to the central viewing region (2).
