To achieve greater efficiency, steam turbines are operated at increasingly higher temperatures. The main components of steam turbines, which are subjected to an operating temperature that exceeds a material-related threshold temperature, the latter concerning in particular conventional steel, must be configured from extremely high-quality materials. The use of higher quality materials leads to the necessity for weld seams between the higher quality material and a conventional material. For construction purposes, turbine regions that are subjected to temperatures below the material-related threshold temperature are usually also configured from high-quality materials. The aim of the invention is to operate a compact steam turbine assembly (1, 2) with maximum steam production that is cost-effective and commercially safe. This is achieved by a first turbine (11, 11'), which is designed to operate as a high-pressure steam turbine and can be subjected to steam at temperatures that exceed or are at a first material-related threshold temperature and a second turbine (12, 12'), which is designed to operate as a medium-pressure steam turbine and can be subjected to steam at temperatures that lie below or at a second material-related threshold temperature. A drive (15) is connected between the two turbines (11, 11' 12, 12').
