A method of effecting a model of sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock in a mammalian subject which utilizes the step of introducing particulate or vesicle associated iNOS into the body of the mammalian subject. Prior to or during such introduction, an innate immune system activator may be introduced into the body of the mammalian subject. Other substances may also be introduced into the mammalian subject prior to or during the introduction of the particulate or vesicle associated iNOS in order to observe the physiological consequences on the mammalian subject.
