This invention provides an efficient standard-compliant system (400 500), apparatus (550) and method for employing the technique of Data Partitioning (DP) to provide acceptable picture quality in digital video transmitted over a wireless home multimedia network (411 510) that may adhere to a layered protocol (300), during conditions of degraded or reduced bandwidth. Such compliance insures that video from a source which incorporates the present invention can be successfully decoded and rendered by any digital video receiver that conforms to the corresponding standard, and that the transmitting equipment can be used with any equipment that adheres to the networking protocol (300).
