The roof element is formed as a composite component and has a plastics component (2) and a sheet metal part (3) made of steel or aluminium plate. At least part, and preferably most, of the plastics and sheet metal parts are spaced from each other and form a thin-walled large-volume stiff hollow structure. Then plastics and metal parts may be secured by gluing, welding or clinching. An Independent claim is included for a cabriolet roof incorporating the element.
