Disclosed are a device and a method for low-complexity implementation of a bidirectional arbitrated adaptive decision feedback equalizer in order to transmit messages via channels that are disturbed by intersymbol interference. The equalizer comprises two prefilters (203, 207), each of which is composed of one or two time reversing operations and no or one IIR filter. The two prefilters split a non-minimum phase channel into two time-reverse near-minimum phase channels which are equalized simultaneously in the forward and reverse direction. The SBS arbiter (212) selects, among the two candidate decisions of the two ADFEs, the one that best represents the sampled receive signal.
