A method for authenticating relating to a network management field, comprises: a network access serving apparatus performs a Link Control Protocol (LCP) negotiation with a network user and acquires the authentication type determined by performing the LCP negotiation; acquires the authentication type configured in the domain to which the user belongs based on the user information provided by user; if the authentication type determined by performing the LCP negotiation is different from the authentication type configured in the domain, performs the LCP renegotiation based on the authentication type configured in the domain to which the user belongs; the network access serving apparatus transmits the authentication request message based on the authentication type determined by successfully performing the LCP renegotiation and configured in the domain to which the user belongs. There are also a method for negotiating the authentication type and a network access serving apparatus. The scheme of the present invention enables the authentication request message transmitted from the network access serving apparatus to the AAA server to be consistent with the authentication type that the AAA server supports.
