Data are compiled by simulation before or during a process which a tooth or material can undergo or has undergone, and the data are then used for computing purposes and/or as reference data after an additional measurement data acquisition process in order to achieve one or more of the purposes of the disclosed methods. Data are acquired at the tooth or material (10) by means of an instrument (12) which can sense the spectral composition and/or the radiation path of electromagnetic radiation, in particular light, and/or by means of another conventional and known method for sensing a condition or liquid content.
