Perfluorinated GRIN optical fibre and methods of fabrication thereof

The fiber (51) has a protection layer (55) made of photo-reticulable resin e.g. acrylate urethane, and surrounding a reinforcement layer (54). The reinforcement layer is made of polymer material different from that of the protection layer and surrounds an optical cladding (53). The polymer material of the reinforcement layer is chosen from polymethylmethacrylate and mixture of polycarbonate and polyester. The cladding has an index lower than that of an optical core (52) and surrounds the core, where the core and cladding are made of fluorinated polymer e.g. cytop. An independent claim is also included for a method for fabricating a perfluorinated graded index plastic optical fiber.
