The present Invention describes the use of an effective amount of a BMP-9 protein for the preparation of a medicament for treating degenerating and/or malfunctioning cholinergic neurons in a patient in need of same wherein the medicament is used to upregulate the genes for choline acetyltransferase and/or vesicular acetylcholine transporter to induce the cholinergic phenotype.
