A pharmaceutical composition for treating or preventing obesity and improving lipid metabolism comprising the extract of Amomum Xanthioides Wallich is provided to inhibit lipase activity and reduce neutral fat concentration in serum in vitro and in vivo without side effects. The pharmaceutical composition for treating or preventing obesity and improving lipid metabolism comprises the extract of Amomum Xanthioides Wallich, wherein the extract of Amomum Xanthioides Wallich is prepared by extracting Amomum Xanthioides Wallich with a solvent selected from water and C1-C4 lower alcohol; the amount of Amomum Xanthioides Wallich extract is 0.1-50 wt.% based on the total weight of the composition. The health food for treating or preventing obesity and improving lipid metabolism comprises the extract of Amomum Xanthioides Wallich and sitologically acceptable food additives, wherein the health food is formulated as powder, granule, tablet, capsule or drink.
